Frequently Asked Questions
The following are questions that we run into on a regular basis.
Q: [DSL Question: What should I do when
I lose my DSL connection to the Internet?]
A: [First look to see if you have all of the lights on your DSL
Modem. If the modem looks normal - a solid DSL light, Ethernet
light, and a power light, then power cycle the modem (turn it off
and back on), do the same for any equipment that is connected
directly to the modem. If this does not clear the problem then
call the service number.
If there are no light, then check for power. If the DSL light is flashing check to ensure the phone cable is connected and that there is no filter between the modem and the phone jack. An unfiltered phone will also cause the DSL light to flash when there is an active call or fax. ]
Q: [My Website quit working, what should
I do?]
A: [It seems that many times when we get a phone call of this nature
we start by looking to see if the URL registration has expired.
Go to your registrar and do a whois lookup. This will save
some time if it is just a registration issue.]
Q: [I can ping my website by IP address,
but I can't pull it up with my browser. Is there something
that I should check?]
A: [If you can get to the website by IP address, but can't get to it
by name, you will more than likely find that there is a DNS issue.]
Q: [What is a gateway address?]
A: [Use this analogy, if you have a fence around your yard, and you
need to get out of the yard you would use the gate to exit the yard.
In a network many things can happen locally without the need of a
gate(way), but as soon as you want to go to the Internet you will
have to go through the gateway. The main settings for your
computer in a network environment is an IP address (
192.168.1.x) a subnet mask (255.255.255.0) a gateway (the router
address for example 192.168.1.1), and a DNS server.]
